"ยิ้มสยาม"ในมุมมองของชาวต่างชาติในไทย

Abstract

งานวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ (1) ศึกษาที่มาและพัฒนาการของยิ้มสยาม (2) วิเคราะห์ความหมายและความสำคัญของ “ยิ้มสยาม” ในมุมมองของชาวต่างชาติในประเทศไทย วิธีการวิจัยเป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ กลุ่มตัวอย่างจำนวนทั้งหมด 85 คน ประกอบด้วยชาวต่างชาติที่ทำงานในแวดวงการศึกษาจำนวน 4 คน วงการธุรกิจจำนวน 4 คน วงการสื่อมวลชน จำนวน 4 คน วงการทูต จำนวน 4 คน และวงการศิลปวัฒนธรรม จำนวน 4 คน และชาวต่างชาติในย่านถนนข้าวสาร จำนวน 15 คน ตลาดนัดสวนจตุจักรจำนวน 16 คน สยามสแควร์จำนวน 14 คน และสีลม จำนวน 16 คน และใช้เทคนิค สโนว์บอลในการคัดเลือกกลุ่มตัวอย่างคนไทย ประกอบด้วยผู้ที่มีความรู้ทางด้านศิลปวัฒนธรรม จำนวน 4 คน เครื่องมือการวิจัยได้แก่ แบบสัมภาษณ์แบบไม่มีโครงสร้างการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลใช้การวิเคราะห์เชิงพรรณนาผลการวิจัยพบวาที่มาของยิ้มสยามในช่วงแรกไม่สามารถแยกออกมาเฉพาะเป็นคำว่า “ยิ้มสยาม” ดังเช่นปัจจุบัน หากแต่สามารถตีความในลักษณะอาการต่างๆ ที่คนไทยเป็นมิตรกับทุกชาติภาษาที่เข้ามาอยู่ ในประเทศไทยดังปรากฏในเอกสารของชาวต่างชาติตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยาหมายถึงการต้อนรับที่มีรอยยิ้มอยู่ด้วยส่วนพัฒนาการของยิ้มสยามหรือรอยยิ้มของคนไทยแบ่งได้เป็น 4 ระยะคือ ระยะที่ 1 ยิ้มสยามในบทบาทของการต้อนรับแสดงอัธยาศัยไมตรีของคนไทย ระยะที่ 2 ยิมสยามในบทบาทของการประชาสัมพันธ์ประเทศไทยและการท่องเที่ยว ระยะที่ 3 ยิ้มสยามในบทบาทที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ของคนไทย เป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งไมตรีและความสุขสงบในสังคม และระยะที่ 4 ยิ้มสยามในปัจจุบันมีบทบาทเป็นเครื่องมือในการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยว ความหมายของยิ้มสยามในมุมมองของคนไทยเห็นว่าเป็นรอยยิ้มที่แสดงถึงมิตรไมตรี ความจริงใจและการต้อนรับขับสู้ความหมายของยิ้มสยามในมุมมองของชาวต่างชาติคือเป็นรอยยิมที่มีรูปแบบที่แสดงถึงความสุข เช่น ยิ้มสดใสร่าเริง เป็นมิตร เปิดเผย จริงใจ ต้อนรับขับสู้ อย่างไรก็ตามในบางครั้งบางคนก็มีลักษณะการแสดงออกทางอารมณ์ที่ไม่ตรงกับสีหน้า เช่น การแสดงออกที่เกินจริง การแสร้งทำ และการสะกดใจหรือการปกปิด ทั้งนี้มีปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการแสดงออกถึงรอยยิ้มคือ วัฒนธรรมและลักษณะเฉพาะ ความสำคัญของยิ้มสยามในมุมมองของชาวต่างชาติมี 3 ด้าน คือ ด้านเศรษฐกิจยิมสยามเป็นเครื่องมือในการดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยว ด้านสังคมยิ้มสยามสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงการปฏิสัมพันธ์ในสังคมไทย ด้านวัฒนธรรมชาวต่างชาติเห็นว่ายิ้มสยามเป็นสัญลักษณ์และจิตวิญญาณของคนไทย ซึ่งสะท้อนให้เห็นว่ายิ้มสยามยังคงเป็นสื่อในการสร้างตัวตนที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ของคนไทยในสายตาชาวต่างชาติได้อยู่เสมอ

The objectives of this research were (1) to study the origin and development of the “Siamese Smile;” (2) to analyze the meaning and significance of the “Siamese Smile” in the point of view of foreigners in Thailand. This was a qualitative research. The sample population of85 people consisted of 4 foreigners working in the field of education, 4 foreigners working in the field of business, 4 foreigners working in the field of journalism, 4 foreigners working in the field of diplomacy, 4 foreigners working in the field of arts and culture, 15 foreigners in the Khao San Road area, 16 foreigners at the Chatuchak Weekend Market, 14 foreigners in the Siam Square area and 16 foreigners in the Silom Road area, as well as 4 Thai people knowledgeable in arts and culture, who were selected using the snowball method. Data were collected using an unstructured interview form and analyzed through descriptive analysis. The results showed that the origin of the concept “Siamese Smile” could not be clearly defined, but Thai people’s manners in giving a friendly reception to foreigners from all corners of the globe was recorded as early as the Ayutthaya Period, when chronicles of foreign visitors state that the Siamese people smiled and gave them a warm reception. The development of “Siamese Smile” can be divided into 4 phases: Phase 1, in the role of a reception showing the friendly character of Thai people; Phase 2, in the role of publicizing Thailand’s image and tourism; Phase 3, in the role of a symbol of the identity of Thai society as a society of friendship, peace and happiness; and Phase 4 (the present), in the role of a tool for promoting tourism. In the viewpoint of Thais, “Siamese Smile” is an expression of comradeship, sincerity and welcoming. In the viewpoint of foreigners, “Siamese Smile” is an expression of happiness, cheerfulness, friendliness, openness, sincerity and welcoming. Nevertheless, sometimes the smile may not convey the wearer’s true emotions, and the “Siamese Smile” may be a mask that is an affectation, obsequious, exaggerated, or a cover to hide one’s true emotions. Culture and personality are factors that can affect the expression of the “Siamese Smile.” In the viewpoint of foreigners, the “Siamese Smile” is significant in 3 ways. First, economically, it is a tool to attract tourists. Second, socially, it is a reflection of interactions in Thai society. Third, culturally, it is a symbol of the spirit of Thai people. This indicates that the “Siamese Smile” is still a medium for building up the identity of Thai people in the eyes of the world.
