Abstract
การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา (1) บริบททางการเมือง การปกครอง และเศรษฐกิจของเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช ที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับราชธานี หัวเมืองภาคใต้และหัวเมืองมลายู ในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้นระหว่าง พ.ศ. 2327 -2435 (2) สถานภาพ บทบาท ปัญหาและอุปสรรคในการบริหารราชการแผ่นดินของเจ้าพระยานครศรีธรรมราช สมัยก่อนการปฏิรูปการปกครองแผ่นดินในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 (3) การบริหารราชการแผ่นดินของเจ้าพระยานครศรีธรรมราช ทั้ง 4 ท่าน คือ เจ้าพระยานครฯ (พัฒน์) เจ้าพระยานครฯ (น้อย) เจ้าพระยานครฯ (น้อยกลาง) และเจ้าพระยานครฯ (หนูพร้อม) ที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อความสัมพันธ์กับราชธานีหัวเมืองภาคใต้และหัวเมืองมลายูการวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยศึกษาจากเอกสารทางประวัติศาสตร์ ทั้งข้อมูลเอกสารชั้นต้น คือสารตราแต่งตั้งเจ้าพระยานครฯ และเอกสารชั้นรอง คือหนังสือและวิทยานิพนธ์ โดยวิธีการทางประวัติศาสตร์ นำมาวิเคราะห์ ตีความ เรียบเรียงและนำเสนอในรูปแบบการวิเคราะห์เชิงพรรณนา ผลการวิจัย พบว่า (1) เมืองนครศรีธรรมราชเป็นเมืองสำคัญ คือ เป็นหัวเมืองเอก เป็นตัวแทนของราชธานี ในการดูแลหัวเมืองภาคใต้ และหัวเมืองมลายู และเป็นเมืองท่ามาตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยาจนถึงสมัยกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ (2) เจ้าพระยานครศรีธรรมราชมีลักษณะความเป็นผู้นำ ทำให้เป็นที่ไว้วางพระราชหฤทัย
เป็นผู้แทนของราชธานีดูแลปกครองเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช และหัวเมืองต่าง ๆ ในภาคใต้ให้สงบเรียบร้อย ดูแลด้านเศรษฐกิจและเป็นผู้เจรจากับตัวแทนรัฐบาลอังกฤษที่กำลังขยายอำนาจเข้ามาในดินแดนมลายูก่อนที่เฮนรีเบอร์นีจะเข้ามาเจรจากับรัฐบาลไทยที่ราชธานี (3) การบริหารของเจ้าพระยานครฯ พบปัญหาความขัดแย้งด้านเชื้อชาติ ศาสนา และอื่น ๆ หลายประการ กับหัวเมืองภาคใต้และหัวเมืองมลายู แต่จะเห็นได้ว่าเจ้าพระยานครฯ ทั้ง 4 ท่าน เป็นบุคคลในตระกูลเดียว คือ ตระกูล ณ นคร ซึ่งไม่เคยปรากฏมาก่อนเลยว่าคนในตระกูลเดียวกันจะเป็นเจ้าเมืองสืบต่อกันมาร่วมร้อยกว่าปี แสดงให้เห็นถึงความสามารถในการรักษาผลประโยชน์ของชาติ ความจงรักภักดี และเป็นที่ไว้วางใจของราชธานี ในการดูแลหัวเมืองต่าง ๆ ทางภาคใต้ และหัวเมืองมลายู ซึ่งเป็นประเทศราชของสยาม สืบมาจนกระทั่งถึงสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ได้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองเป็นมณฑลเทศาภิบาล บทบาทของเจ้าพระยานครฯ จึงยุติลง
The thesis aims to study three areas: 1) The political and economic context of Nakorn Si Dhammaraj during the early years of the Rattanakosin Era from B.E.2327 to B.E. 2435 (1784 - 1892), in particular, the pyramidal collaborations between Bangkok – the siege of power -- and the southern provinces and the Malaya tributary of Siam; 2) Role and status of the Chao Muang (Lords of Nakorn Si Dhammaraj), the difficulties and problems encountered and overcome in their efforts to establish public administration before the Great Reform of King Chulalongkorn and; 3) Strategies of the four Lords (Chao Phraya Pat, Chao Phraya Noi, Chao Phraya Noi Klang and Chao Phraya Nou Prom) and their effects on the overall conditions of the triangle relationships. The qualitative research focuses on the study of primary sources (archives) and secondary sources (publications and thesis). It is presented through the interpretation of a narrative and chronological order with historical details. The research has resulted in three principle remarks: 1) Not only was Nakorn Si Dhammaraj - the first ranked province, symbolizing the representative of Bangkok to control the southern provinces and the Malaya tributary but it was also a major seaport and the main destination for foreign merchants from the Ayudhaya Era to the Rattanakosin Era; 2) The leadership of the Lords of Nakorn Si Dhammaraj favoured the Royal Family who did not hesitate to delegate to them the implementation of state policies. During the British colonialism in Malaya, the Lord of Nakorn Si Dhammaraj succeeded in playing the role of a diplomatic counterpart and signed the Preliminary Treaty with Henry Burney, the representative of the British Government and; 3) However, due to internal political problems, the diversity of culture, religious and other social concerns, the Lords of Nakorn Si Dhammaraj succeeded in maintaining peace and order. It is also remarkable that four consecutive Lords of Nakorn Si Dhammaraj remained from generation to generation in the Na Nakorn Family, which furnished ample evidence of charisma, experience, loyalty and professionalism in the administration. Finally, through the Great Reform of King Chulalongkorn, Nakorn Si Dhammaraj was fully absorbed by the central government which converted it to Monthon Thesaphiban and with this transformation, the role of the Lords of Nakorn Si Dhammaraj came to an abrupt end.
