บัญญัติพระทุทธศาสนาเป็นศาสนาประจำชาติไว้ในรัฐธรรมนูญแห่งราชอาณาจักรไทย คือ ความต่อเนื่องของ
แนวคิดที่ต้องการให้พระพุทธศาสนาเป็นศาสนาประจำชาติ และสภาวะการณ์ที่เหมาะสมของสังคมการเมืองใน ขณะนั้น สาเหตุของการเคลื่อนไหวเกิดจากความต้องการของกลุ่มพระสงฆ์ที่พัฒนาพระพุทธศาสนาใน เรื่องของการเผยแผ่ ให้มีประสิทธิภาพกว้างขวางยิ่งขึ้น และความต้องการที่จะให้ภาครัฐให้ความสำคัญดูแล สนับสนุนพระทุทธศาสนาและสถาบันสงฆ์ให้มีความมั่นคง และวัตถุประสงค์ของการชุมนุมเคลื่อนไหว คือ ความต้องการที่จะให้พระพุทธศาสนาเป็นศาสนาประจำชาติโดยนิตินัยและเป็นห่วงภัยคุกคามจากนอกศาสนา 2. พฤติกรรมของกลุ่มพระสงฆ์ในการผลักต้นให้มีการบัญญัติพระทุทธศาสนาเป็นศาสนาประจำชาติ คือ พระสงฆ์ชั้นปกครองและพระสงฆ์แกนนำมีความคิดเห็นว่าเป็นหน้าที่ของพระสงฆ์ที่ต้องปกป้องพระพุทธศาสนาและไม่เป็นการผิดในด้านวินัยสงฆ์ที่พระสงฆ์ออกมาชุมนุมเคลื่อนไหว โดยยกประเด็นข้อดีของการบัญญัติพระพุทธศาสนาเป็นศาสนาประจำชาติเผยแผ่ผ่านขบวนการสื่อสาร ได้แก่ การบรรยายธรรมะ สื่อสิ่งพิมพ์ และสื่ออินเทอร์น็ต และชักชวนให้พระสงฆ์ใต้บังคับบัญชาและฆราวาสลูกศิษย์ออกมาชุมนุมเคลื่อนไหว กลุ่มพระสงฆ์ที่เข้าร่วมชุมนุมมีการรวมกลุ่มทำกิจกรรมทางการเมืองร่วมกัน เช่น เดินขบวนเรียกรัองที่หน้าทำเนียบรัฐบาล อดอาหารกดดันต่อฝ่ายการเมือง 3. ผลกระทบที่เกิดขนจากการเคลื่อนไหวของกลุ่มพระสงฆ์ คือ ประชาชนส่วนใหญ่ไม่เห็นด้วยกลับการกระทำของกลุ่มพระสงฆ์ที่ออกมาชุมนุมเคลื่อนไหว เพราะพระสงฆ์ไม่ควรเข้ามายุ่งเกี่ยวกับการเมือง ในกลุ่มประชาชนที่มีความคิดเห็นว่าเป็นการถูกต้องแลัวที่พระสงฆ์ออกมาเคลี่อนไทว เพื่อที่พระพุทธศาสนามีความมั่นคงในด้านกฎหมายของประเทศ เพราะพระทุทธศาสนาสามารถช่วยพัฒนาสังคมไทยให้มีความสงบสุขได้
the objectives of this research were to study: 1. the background, reasons and objectives of the movement to push to amend the constitution to instate Buddhism as the national religion; 2. the behavior of Buddhist monks in this movement; and 3. the impact of the movement. This was qualitative research based on documents and interviews with a sample of 14 monks involved in the movement, including hierarchs and leaders of the movement. Data were collected using an interview form and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that 1. the movement to have Buddhism instated as the national religion grew from the idea of having Buddhism as the national religion and the suitability of the political situation at the time. The reasons for the movement were that a group of monks wanted to develop greater efficiency in spreading Buddhism and wanted the government to provide more support for Buddhism and the Buddhist clergy. The objectives of the movement were to officially make Buddhism the national religion by law and to protect Buddhism against threats. 2. The administrative level monks and the leaders of the movement felt that it was the duty of monks to protect the religion and that it was not against their rules to join in this kind of political movement. The communication process they used to promote their cause consisted of sermons, print media, Internet and personal communication to encourage other monks and lay people to join the movement. They joined in political activities such as demonstrations in front of Government House and hunger strikes to pressure the government. 3. The major impact of the movement was that the majority of the public did not approve of the monks’ behavior because they felt that monks should not be involved in political matters. Some members of the public approved of the movement because they agreed that Buddhism should be supported by national law in order to help promote peace in society.
